Democratic Digest Special 1961 Inaugural Issue

Touts New Housing Chief as the "highest Federal position ever held by a Negro"

This interesting publication of the national Democratic Party issued to coincide with the Inauguration celebration on January 20, 1961 provides lots of information on John F. Kennedy and his new cabinet.  The most interesting article in light of the 2009 inauguration of Barack Obama is the description of Dr. Robert C. Weaver, the new head of the Housing Finance Agency (later incorporated into the new Department of Housing and Urban Development) as "the highest Federal position ever held by a Negro."

One of the more controversial appointments of JFK as that of his brother Bobby as Attorney General. The Digest explains his qualifications.

This rare and unusual publication provides an interesting perspective on the Democratic Party and shows how far the nation has come in 48 years.
